Antique English 17th Century Six Plank Oak Coffer
Antique English 17th Century Six Plank Oak Coffer
A wonderful late 17th century six plank oak coffer. English, circa 1790. Simplistic in its form and retaining all original timbers along with original strap iron hinges, lock (no key present) and striking plate. Raised on extended stiles with little or no reduction in height, (a rarity due to the age and fact of standing for long periods of time sometimes in damp conditions). The hinged lid opens up to reveal a generous expanse of storage which bodes well for the balance of practicality and aesthetics. The hewn timbers are incredibly tactile and you can positively feel the history within. Overall, the simplicity, age and history along with enviable proportions and warm rich patina is what gives this coffer its allure.

History:
The coffer holds the origins to the chest of drawers that we all use today. While its use and name may not be as well known in the present, the antique coffer has enjoyed centuries of use and has a long and varied history. The antique coffer is a plain simple box constructed from planks of oak, with a hinged lid. Most were constructed pre 1700s, meaning that they are connected with a long and interesting history. They were simple in construction but strong and well made. The coffer was used for storing goods such as valuables, weapons and clothing. Alternatively they were used for transporting goods or as a seat or side table. In fact, the antique coffer had many uses, especially in earlier centuries. It served as a piece of portable furniture and could be used as a traveling trunk, table or even a bed.
