19th Century European Chest
19th Century European Chest
A very substantial 19th century European Marriage Chest / Dowry Chest of great proportion. What makes this this such a superb decorative piece is the heavily distressed remnants of layers of paint, stain and varnish which have accumulated and then broken down over time and ownership. The inside is reasonably untouched (compared to the patinated exterior),and still retains its original strap lock which has previously been deactivated, probably through fear of minors playing and locking themselves in. The sides retain their iron lifting handles. Also, commonplace with this type of chest is the candle box and under shelf, all of which are in good strong clean order. This piece looks to have had the most wonderful life and considering its age and time related wear the chest is very structurally sound, albeit with every knock gouge and scar. Due to cracks to the original hinges these have been replaced to keep it strong and fully functional. This is solely the only restoration to be taken out and otherwise comes to market as sourced.
