Large Antique Oak Silver Chest Travel Trunk
Large Antique Oak Silver Chest Travel Trunk
A striking large 19th century English oak and strap iron bound silver chest, campaign trunk, dating to the mid Victorian period, circa 1860.
This substantial chest displays distinct and exceptional craftsmanship throughout. Constructed of fine quality close grained oak timbers and showing wonderfully exposed dovetail jointing to all sides, top and bottom. The exterior shows extensive heavy gauge & blacksmith made strap iron work and bindings. There is a pair of prominent, weighty and considerable hinged iron straps that wrap the entire trunk. The deep lid is held closed by original strap iron clasps that lock snugly and deliberately into place. No key present. Dressed with substantially weighty drop iron work carrying handles that present themselves extremely well to either side. The chest itself opens up to reveal a voluminous interior with the option of using the original series and fitment of well crafted compartmental silver storage boxes. To add to its authenticity a pair of large linen/cotton sheets with the gentlemans sewn in initials still exist. These were used for wrapping, protecting and hiding the silver. An engraved brass plaque to the top reads ‘James Gordon Esq’.
There will be as much joy to be had in the research of this wealthy gentleman as there will be just to gaze at this chest in its entirety. I say wealthy for obvious reasons……..The larger the chest, the more silver you possessed and this is a large chest.
