Globe Wernicke 4 Tier Bookcase Display
Globe Wernicke 4 Tier Bookcase Display
A beautiful & impressive four tier (six section) Globe Wernicke oak Barristers/Library stacking bookcase on a plinth base, circa 1900, with four typical lift and slide glass doors. Comes with original makers badge to each glazed section. This type of bookcase was often referred to as a Barristers bookcase and advertised as “Always complete but never finished” due to the variations that could be achieved by adding or taking away sections. This particular version splits down into six stacking sections (including plinth base and cornice top) that fit snugly and seamlessly into or onto the next. A superb and rare example, aged beautifully, retaining its rich oak colour with wonderful shades of the lighter honey oak showing through.
This is the rare circa 1900s early antique version with inscribed patent marks inside the pelmet and plinth sections. They added the name ‘elastic’ to these Globe Wernicke bookcases due to the rollers at the back of the glazed sections that gave a sort of tension when lifting and sliding the door. Three of the four still exist, though lack of tension.
Condition: Been looked after very well with only very minimal age related wear. Overall superb. All locks present to each glazed section that slide on striking plate and click nicely into place when closing. No key is present.
